CECH EYES SHUT-OUT RECORD Keeper Petr Cech is just one clean sheet away from equalling Manchester United's Premiership record of 24 shut-outs in a season as Chelsea look to take another big step towards the title on Saturday. Chelsea, who hold an 11-point lead with just five games left, face Fulham at Stamford Bridge on the 50th anniversary of the only top-flight triumph in the club's history. While they cannot yet claim this season's crown, victory against their local rivals would ensure that Arsenal had to beat Tottenham on Monday at Highbury just to keep the race alive. Even if Arsenal won, Chelsea would then be at most two points from the title, which could be clinched at Bolton's Reebok Stadium the following Saturday. Cech is taking nothing for granted just yet, although he was satisfied with another clean sheet in the midweek goalless draw at home to Arsenal. "It was important for me and important for everyone as we couldn't stop conceding goals, especially in the Champions League," the 22-year-old declared. "If you are consistently playing well, then you can be champions. I think that's where we've been better than Arsenal as they've dropped some points during the season and we simply didn't do that." While Chelsea have built their title success on their superb defensive record, they have looked rather more vulnerable in the past few weeks, with Paulo Ferreira and Wayne Bridge out injured. They have conceded 15 goals in the past 11 games, with just two clean sheets, although nine of those goals came in the four Champions League ties against Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Cech, an ever-present in the league, is nevertheless poised to match United's Premiership record from 1994/95, when Peter Schmeichel was still at the club even if he did not play in every game that season. Indeed, just four goalkeepers - Ray Clemence (28), Bob Wilson (25), David Seaman (24) and Gary Sprake (24) - have kept more clean sheets than Cech in a top-flight season. Cech, the Czech Republic international, who is among those nominated for the players' player-of-the-year award, told Chelsea TV: "It's always difficult to keep clean sheets and we have played good sides, especially in the Champions League, recently. "That's a different style of football and maybe the point is that you can't keep on playing in the same way that you're playing in the Premiership. "If you play aggressively, then you can be caught out. So maybe you have to be more careful and must be more strong." That is not quite so relevant for their semi-final against Liverpool, with Jose Mourinho needing to decide whether to rest any players on Saturday ahead of next Wednesday's first-leg tie. Assistant coach Steve Clarke insisted: "We're going to put out a team against Fulham that can win the game as we need three points. That would put us very close to the title and then we'd seen what happens." Arjen Robben is still out with an ankle injury, although physio Mike Banks reported the winger "has been working with the fitness coach to prepare his condition ready for training", while Scott Parker, Ferreira and Bridge are long-term absentees. teamtalk.com
