Arsenal FA Cup final penpix Penpix of Arsenal players ahead of Saturday's FA Cup final against Manchester United in Cardiff:
GOALKEEPER: 1-JENS LEHMANN, Age 35. Back in the side after being dropped in December and January in favour of Spaniard Manuel Almunia. Signed from Borussia Dortmund in 2003, the German international has a volatile reputation and poor judgment on his part has cost Arsenal on several occasions. October's 2-1 loss at Old Trafford was his first league defeat in an Arsenal shirt. DEFENDERS: 3-ASHLEY COLE, 24. First-choice left back for England, and Arsenal after usurping Brazilian international Silvinho in 2000. Pace and sharp tackling are his strengths and his willingness to get forward makes him a dangerous addition to Arsenal's attack. Faces FA charge after alleged "tap-up" by Chelsea. 12-LAUREN, 28. Tough-tackling right back. Returned to the Cameroon national side after a self-imposed exile after the 2002 World Cup. Was suspended for his part in last season's post-match fracas at Old Trafford. 20-PHILIPPE SENDEROS, 20. Swiss central defender who enjoyed extended run from late February to early May, keeping Sol Campbell out despite his eventual recovery from injury. Still learning but tough, solid in the tackle and good in the air. 18-PASCAL CYGAN, 31. French centre-back signed from Lille in 2002. His career at Highbury has been limited by the emergence of Kolo Toure, while sceptics have not been convinced by his performances when standing in for team mates. 23-SOL CAMPBELL, 30. Defensive rock for Arsenal and England who crossed north London divide in 2001 on a free transfer from Tottenham Hotspur. Sidelined for three months after picking up an ankle injury in February's 4-2 defeat by United at Highbury. Was sent off in the home game against United in 2003. 28-KOLO TOURE, 24. Made his debut in 2002 and is now a fixture as centre back, forming an impressive partnership with either Campbell or Senderos. Has real pace and quick reactions, a regular for the Ivory Coast national team. MIDFIELDERS 4-PATRICK VIEIRA, 28. A bargain after joining from AC Milan in 1996 for $6.4 million and developing into one of the game's best midfielders. World Cup winner and European champion with France, Arsenal's captain turned down a close season move to Real Madrid. Combines incisive tackling and great distribution. Was red-carded against United at Old Trafford last season. 7-ROBERT PIRES, 31. Off-loaded by Olympique Marseille in 2000, Pires has blossomed into one of the Premier League's best goalmaking and scoring wingers. Plays on the left flank, despite being right-footed, and has been helped by close rapport with Thierry Henry, who will be missing on Saturday because of injury. 8-FREDRIK LJUNGBERG, 28. A crowd favourite at Highbury, the Swedish international scored in two consecutive FA Cup finals for the club in 2001 and 2002. Hampered this season by a longstanding hip problem but still a proven goalscorer. 15-FRANCESC FABREGAS, 18. Arsenal's most exciting prospect, has unexpectedly played for most of the season after deputising first for Vieira and then Brazilians Gilberto and Edu. Poise and vision belie his years. Last season, became club's youngest player and youngest scorer aged 16 years and 212 days. 16-MATHIEU FLAMINI, 21. Combative French under-21 international midfielder who joined from Olympique Marseille last year. Is now breaking into the first team after a series of convincing displays during a mid-season injury crisis. 17-EDU, 27. A regular in last season's unbeaten run to the title, he has been laid low by injuries this season and is expected to leave as a free agent after failing so far to agree a new contract. A member of Brazil's Copa America-winning side. 19-GILBERTO, 28. Has missed virtually the whole season with a fractured verterbra. Joined from Atletico Mineiro in 2002. A reliable midfielder who scored the fastest ever Champions League goal in a match against PSV Eindhoven in 2002. Played in Brazil's 2002 World Cup final win over Germany. FORWARDS: 30-JEREMIE ALIADIERE, 22. Plenty of potential but desperately unlucky with injuries -- making his first league appearance this season as a late substitute against Chelsea on April 20 after damaging knee ligaments in the Community Shield in August. 9-JOSE ANTONIO REYES, 21. Signed from Sevilla in a January 2004 deal worth a reported $36 million and made blistering start to this season before a sudden loss of form. Told a bogus radio interviewer in February he would like to play for Real Madrid. Scored the only goal of last month's derby with Spurs. 10-DENNIS BERGKAMP, 36. Former Dutch international who has become a cult hero at Highbury with his incisive passing and deadly strikes since joining in 1995. Bound to play a part in Cardiff but uncertain whether his one-year contract will be renewed at the end of the season. 11-ROBIN VAN PERSIE, 21. Coming in to form and controlling his temper since a red card in February marred the Dutchman's debut season after joining from Feyenoord. Left-footed and comfortable in either a striker's role or on the wing, he scored twice after coming on as an 82nd-minute substitute in the 3-0 Cup semi-final win over Blackburn at Cardiff last month. = KEEP Manchester United Football Club INDEPENDENT = __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
