Messina, Torino expelled from Serie A
Messina and Torino have been expelled from Serie A by the Italian Football
Federation (FIGC) because of the poor state of their finances. Both clubs
have already indicated they will appeal in the law courts against any ban,
meaning the case could rumble on until the start of next season on August 28
"I'm not optimistic but I'm realistic and I think that we have all of the
tools in hand and all of the prerequisites to remain in Serie A," Torino
chairman Tilli Romero told ANSA news agency.
Perugia and Salernitana will be barred from Serie B and a number of clubs
from Italy's lower division because of their financial problems, the
chairman of Italy's Football League Adriano Galliani told ANSA after the
FIGC meeting.
If Messina lose their appeal, the club most likely to benefit is Bologna,
who were relegated from Serie A after losing a playoff against Parma at the
end of the season.
Bologna's president, Giuseppe Gazzoni, said his club would take legal action
aimed at their restoration to the top flight in place of Messina.
"We'll take part as a third party in all the appeals," he was quoted as
saying in Corriere dello Sport on Friday."From here on, we will fight our
case."
Torino's expulsion could open the way for the club that finished fifth in
Serie B, Treviso, to take their place.
Messina and Torino's troubles are just the latest in a string of financial
problems to hit clubs in Italy's top division in recent years.
Twice Italian champions Fiorentina went bankrupt before the 2002-03 season
while in December 2003, twice UEFA Cup winners Parma were hit by the
near-bankruptcy of their parent company Parmalat.
