Kromkamp opens with promise to close down Rooney

Jan Kromkamp arrived at Liverpool yesterday, already relishing his new club's
game at Manchester United on January 22. The 25-year-old Holland international
has twice frustrated Wayne Rooney in the last 12 months and has no fears of
meeting the England striker for a third time.

Kromkamp, who joined Liverpool from Villarreal in a swap deal which saw Josemi
move in the opposite direction, played just six Liga games after struggling to
adapt to the Spanish way of life. But Kromkamp denies his confidence has been
dented by his experience in Spain, where he encountered language difficulties
among other things, and has predicted a long and successful stay on Merseyside.

The Old Trafford encounter is a match which is likely to see him come up
against international colleagues Edwin van der Sar and Ruud van Nistelrooy. Yet
it is the prospect of testing himself against Rooney again which is the main
reason Kromkamp is relishing one of the most eagerly awaited fixtures in
English football.

The former AZ Alkmaar player kept Rooney quiet as Holland earned a goalless
draw in a friendly last February before repeating the trick four months ago to
the extent that the United striker pressed the self-destruct button and got
sent off as Villarreal held Sir Alex Ferguson's men to a 0-0 draw in the
Champions League.

"The England match was very good from a Holland point of view," said Kromkamp.
"Rooney's a very good player but I didn't encounter any particular problems.
That makes me feel I can do a job for Liverpool in the Premiership.

"I did not have a lot of time to learn the language in Spain. I signed so
quickly from AZ Alkmaar and then I was away with the national team. I did
understand my team-mates but when Liverpool came along it was an easy decision
to make.

"I speak good English already and I know something about the Premiership
because Van Nistelrooy and [Robin] Van Persie are always talking about
Manchester and London when I'm with them on international duty."

Josemi's Anfield downfall was partly blamed on his failure to grasp the English
language but Kromkamp, whose favoured position is right-back, is determined to
establish himself as a prominent figure in Rafael Benítez's plans.

Steve Finnan occupies the right-back slot at the moment but will now face more
competition for his place. "Playing is important to me and that's what I've
come here to do," said Kromkamp. "I'm not a player who likes to sit on the
bench. I'm confident I can get in the side otherwise I wouldn't be here."

Benítez, who could bolster his defence further with the Denmark international
Daniel Agger from Brondby for a fee of £5.5m, is confident Kromkamp will do
well in the Premiership.

"Jan's coming here to play as much as possible," said Benítez, who may delay
Krom-kamp's debut until after tomorrow's FA Cup third round tie at Luton. "If
he puts Finnan under pressure then that can only be good for the club. We need
competition in all areas."

The Liverpool manager is also close to confirming the arrival of the
19-year-old goalkeeper David Martin from MK Dons. Martin, son of the former
West Ham and England player Alvin, has impressed during a trial at Melwood. His
potential arrival comes as Jerzy Dudek, Liverpool's penalty hero in the victory
over Milan in Istanbul, appears to have lost his patience after losing his
place to Jose Reina.

Dudek has indicated he would like to return to his former club Feyenoord and
wants Benítez to allow him to leave before the end of the month. However, the
Liverpool manager, who has Chris Kirkland on loan at West Bromwich, is unlikely
to grant his request as that would leave him with only Scott Carson, who has
made just four league starts since joining from Leeds last January, as a
back-up should Reina suffer an injury.

"I hope I will be able to leave because my situation is beginning to make me
angry," said Dudek.
