Sam,
Smith Undergoes Successful Operation

Alan Smith underwent a successful operation on Sunday morning
to repair his broken leg and dislocated ankle, the club have
confirmed.A club spokesman told ManUtd.com: "The operation was a success.
Alan will remain in hospital for a couple of days, and the leg
will be in plaster for several weeks.
"Everybody connected with the club is wishing Alan well for a
speedy recovery."
Smith suffered the shocking setback as he landed awkwardly when
trying to block a John Arne Riise shot in United's 1-0 FA Cup
defeat against Liverpool at Anfield.
The nature of the 25-year-old's landing caused his left ankle
to buckle and dislocate, the force of which subsequently broke
his leg.
Earlier on Sunday, Alex Black - Alan's agent - played down
fears over the Yorkshireman's future in football despite the
sickening and serious nature of the injury.
Black told Sky Sports News: "Certainly, from speaking to Alan,
that's not been indicated to him at all (the injury being
career threatening).
"He is a pretty tough character. It is frustrating, but he will
try and get back to fitness as soon as he can."
Alan Smith's agent Alex Black

"It's hard to tell exactly how bad the damage will be to the
ligaments on the ankle until it has all calmed down.
"The two injuries in themselves certainly aren't career
threatening, but a combination of the two is a problem for the
rehabilitation.
"He is a pretty tough character and is already talking about
it. It is frustrating, but he will try and get back to fitness
as soon as he can."
Black also took time to thank Liverpool's staff for their part
in assisting Smith on the field, and also a section of the home
support for their applause, on behalf of his client.
He said: "Even though Alan was a little bit delirious as he was
coming off, he was able to recognise that not just United fans,
but a lot of Liverpool fans, were giving him a round of
applause.
"All the staff and various doctors have been fantastic and he
wanted to say thank you to all those people."
