Visitors to Munich who arrive by plane at Franz-Josef-Strauss
Airport, to the north of the metropolis on the River Isar,
face a close encounter with an outsize rendition of the Reds
keeper as they continue their journey away from the airport.
A 65 metre (215 foot) wide and 18 metre (60 foot) tall image
of the star, suspended like a bridge over the four-lane
highway, will remain in place to greet new arrivals until the
end of the World Cup.
The nose on the billboard of the 2002 World Goalkeeper of the
Year covers an area of four square metres (43 square feet),
while the keeper?s glove is seven metres (23 feet) long.
"I?ve seen plenty of images of myself in the course of my
long professional career, but this is far and away the most
spectacular," a visibly impressed Kahn declared.
"I?m feeling in great shape. My job is to be 100% ready in
case I?m called upon. Basically, I?m training even harder
than normal, because the reserve players still have work to
do after warm-up matches, the 36-year-old told the Bild
tabloid.
"I?m only the number two, but I still have a leader?s role
to fulfil. Not a great deal has changed in this respect."
