MORATTI: "FOCUSED ON OURSELVES"
*Thursday, 17 August 2006 19:46:22 *

[image: [FOTO Thursday, 17 August 2006 19:46:22]] FORTE DEI MARMI - Inter
patron Massimo Moratti, currently on holiday in the Tuscan seaside resort of
Forte dei Marmi, gave this interview to SkyItalia:

How can you be happy when you have spent all this money? You have spent more
than anyone else in Europe...
"Who says I'm happy? I don't know, we will see if we win something and if
the accounts balance, because in some way or another we have to balance the
accounts."

The money best spent on a player you have bought?
"Definitely Ronaldo because he brought in a lot of sponsors, and most of all
because when he was sold we earned twice as much as we spent to buy him.
Apart from the period in which he couldn't play, he brought to Inter great
popularity, both personally and through what he did."

On the subject of Ronaldo, Milan are apparently after him. Capello has said
that the Brazilian will not leave Madrid. Is it true that you would like to
have him back at Inter?
"No, but I have respect and fondness for Ronaldo, so he wouldn't be doing me
a big favour if he went to the other team in Milan. However, I think we are
basically fine as we are."

Signing
Ibrahimovic<http://inter.it/aas/squadra/player1?codgioc=G0805&L=en&stagione=2006/07>was
great coup for Inter, but also very spiteful to Milan. Did you think
about this when you got him to sign the contract?
"No, but perhaps I didn't realise it was as spiteful as Milan made out. I
couldn't be sure that Milan wanted him. It is not a matter of spite, but
there is also competition in football, so you have to try and stop the other
teams from becoming stronger."

How do you feel in this new role of transfer market king? Once upon a time
there was Luciano Moggi...
"These are two different things because Luciano Moggi never spent his own
money. We're talking about two completely different roles, and neither am I
a transfer market expert. I just ask if certain things can be done or how
they can be done. There are transfer market experts, like Oriali and Branca
at Inter, who do their job. And the best thing to do is balance the
accounts, so I hope this happens sooner or later."

Can we say this is a final call for Mancini, that this team has to win at
all costs?
"Every coach is asked to do well, so the same goes for Mancini. We will
certainly need more consistency than in the last two years. He has more
experience so I think he has every capability of doing well this season. And
he also has the players to do it."

Does Massimo Moratti still have a dream?
"Let's say I don't have any useless dreams. This is my dream. Let's hope
that the team is slightly more pragmatic than it has been in the past."

There was talk of Massimo Moratti as a possible number one at the Italian
Football League, and then Matarrese was chosen. How did you take this
appointment?
"Matarrese has the experience, knowledge and common sense that could be very
useful. We were expecting a change, a figure who would bring a certain kind
of organisation to the Football League. The football scandal? Some things
have changed in football, so this should lead to greater confidence."

Milan will start with a points penalty, but they say they will win the
Scudetto. Do you think Milan will be a competitive side even though they
will start with minus eight points?
"Minus eight points are two and a half matches, so I don't think it's the
end of the world. They will be psychologically motivated for the
championship. We just have to focus on ourselves. We can do well with the
squad we have, but we mustn't make any careless mistakes."

They say Moratti, as a patron, is too kind. Is this true?
"Yes, I am labelled as being too kind. But I don't know what being unkind
means. I don't give much much importance to things I feel are not important,
and this can sometimes seem like an excess of kindness."

What is the Champions League <http://inter.it/en/stagione06/CL/> for you?
"It is an important competition with great appeal. The Champions
League<http://inter.it/en/stagione06/CL/>is the true objective to try
and reach because in trying to do so you are
also strong in the league."

They say that Buffon could join Inter in the final days of the transfer
market.
"No. This is out of the question."

Is Inter's transfer market finished?
(Smiles) "I think so... Well... maybe another striker..."
