Celtic v Leeds remains the mother of all British battles

Of all the notable encounters between English and Scottish sides perhaps the
most famous was in 1970, when Don Revie's treble-chasing Leeds United team met
the great Celtic side of Jock Stein in the European Cup semi-final. George
Connelly got Celtic off to a flyer in the first leg and, although Billy Bremner
silenced most of the 133,961 at Hampden Park for the second leg by levelling
it, the Hoops reached a second final in four years through John Hughes and
Bobby Murdoch. But they lost to Feyenoord.

Celtic had previously met Liverpool in the 1966 Cup Winners' Cup semi-final
when a Bobby Lennox goal at Parkhead gave them the edge but a Tommy Smith
free-kick and a Geoff Strong header in six second-half minutes at Anfield sent
the Reds through to a Hampden Park final they would lose to Borussia Dortmund.

In late 1980 Liverpool beat Aberdeen in the European Cup second round in what
was the sole match-up of Bob Paisley and Alex Ferguson as managers. Terry
McDermott scored the only goal at a freezing Pittodrie and Liverpool chalked up
a 4-0 win at Anfield, where Willie Miller put into his own goal before Kenny
Dalglish and Alan Hansen got on to the scoresheet. Liverpool went on to win the
trophy for a third time in May 1981. Rangers beat Leeds 2-1 home and away
in the 1993 European Cup. Gary McAllister knocked in a free-kick to give Leeds
the lead at Ibrox but an own-goal from John Lukic levelled it and Ally McCoist
hit the winner. Rangers raced into a two-goal lead at Elland Road, Mark Hateley
and McCoist scoring early on, and only Eric Cantona managed a reply. The Gers
finished one win short of making the final, Marseille's always tainted 1-0
victory over Milan. Liverpool again met Celtic in the first round of the
1997-98 Uefa Cup and won on away goals, all of
them coming in a 2-2 first leg at Parkhead. The Hoops were to get revenge in
the 2002-03 competition; they saw off Blackburn home and away in the second
round before defeating Liverpool 3-1 in the quarter-final, following up a 1-1
draw with a 2-0 win at Anfield thanks to Alan Thompson and John Hartson. The
Hoops reached the final, losing only to Porto and their gamesmanship. In
the 2004 European Cup Manchester United won a group game 1-0 at Rangers and the
return 3-0, which featured a Diego Forlán rarity, as they finished top of the
group and the Ibrox club bottom.
