Marco Caneira is a much-travelled Portuguese international central
defender who can also play at full-back.
Club
Caneira has spent the past decade at leading clubs both at home and
abroad. He came up through the youth ranks at Sporting Clube de
Portugal but did not settle and from 1998 played for six different
clubs over the the next five seasons, leaving Sporting for SC
Beira-Mar, then Alverca Futebol SAD before a switch to Italy and
Reggina Calcio in 2000. He did enough in 22 appearances to earn a move
to FC Internazionale Milano the following summer, but without playing
a game was sent on loan to SL Benfica where his impressive displays
brought international recognition. For 2002/03 he was loaned out to FC
Girondins de Bordeaux where he played 30 times in his first term in
Ligue 1 before signing a four-year contract. Twelve months on he was
loaned out again, this time to Valencia CF. That move became permanent
in 2005 but the signing of his compatriot Miguel limited Caneira's
opportunities and in the winter he returned to Sporting.
