Chinaglia fights extortion charges 14-Oct-2006
Ex-Lazio legend Giorgio Chinaglia has strenuously denied lying about a bid
to buy the club after police charged him with extortion.
*"I have done nothing wrong,"* he insisted on Sky TG24.* "I am innocent and
still haven't quite understood what's happening here. *
*"All I know is that Claudio Lotito refused to sell Lazio to a Hungarian
conglomerate or even negotiate with them. That was eight months ago and we
had all moved on, accepting the decision."*
Italian police issued nine arrest warrants on Friday after "communications,
which lacked any basis in fact, were circulated in the early months of this
year by a few individuals about a foreign group interested in buying a
controlling stake in the club," explained a statement.
President Lotito urged an investigation after the club's share value
increased by over 30 per cent following the allegations of a take-over bid,
now thought to be fake.
*"I also read that some fans were arrested, though I don't know why," *added
Chinaglia. *"I've done nothing wrong and will prove my innocence."*
The 1974 Scudetto winner with the Biancocelesti has been vocal in his
criticism of Lotito and blamed him for the incident.
*"This person is only hurting Lazio. I am really curious to know why he is
doing all of this! The fans don't deserve it."*
