Old Trafford. Bloody hell, what an awesome site the place is when packed to its 76,000 capacity, floodlights on, and a crowd that is really up for it. It was an atmosphere that crackled and buzzed even through the cold medium of the TV screen. With tier after tier of fans ascending into the night sky, it was impossible not to be impressed. This was football played out as theatre as much as sport, and as such, makes a mockery of Shy's 'Showdown' puffery, though it was nice to hear a bit of ELO's old classic - presumably because it's the only hit single with the word Showdown in it. No hype is needed for an occasion like this at avenue like Old Trafford. The shot of Abramovich before kick off just looking around, clearly in awe of the packed tiers of fans all around him, with that odd, blank, Fozzy Bear look on his face should have showed him just how far Chelsea and indeed, almost everyone else has to go before they can even think of matching Manchester United for sheer big bollocks spectacle; for sheer occasion; and for sheer pulling power. These are Guvnors, regardless of how well the team played. At almost twice the capacity of Stamford Bridge and 10 times the noise, it should have shown Abramovich just who the Boss of English football really is, and it isn't Chelsea. For all of their, at times, thrillingly resolute football; and fair play to them for coming out in the second half and leaning so hard on the home side until they broke - that took massive self-belief in that cauldron, for all of that, Manchester United - the whole concept of them - the 'brand' as Kenyon so sickeningly calls it, looked and felt like the superstars. It reminded me of when I went to Knebworth to see Led Zeppelin. There we were in a field with a couple of hundred thousand drunken bikers and assorted hairies. We sat through a seemingly interminable line-up of bands. Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes came on and did their superb New Jersey boog-a-loo. As tight as a ducks arse in a sand storm, they were both rock and roll. Then on came Todd Rundgren in a banana coloured cat suit with what looked like a banana stuffed down one leg and delivered a magnificent set of his weird proggy soul space rock. It was excellent. But as excellent as it was, as the sun started going down on the hot summer's day, the whole place was transformed by the excitement of seeing Zep's first UK show for 4 years. The air was thick with anticipation; it hung heavy in the air - you could feel it, you could taste it, and as the band hit the stage, the sheer volume of the roar that greeted them took the breath right out of your lungs. A biker woman took off her t-shirt and revealed a massive pair of pendulous breasts but it only momentarily distracted me from the stage. The sound from where I was standing was rotten for about 20 minutes, swirling like mist, but it didn't matter because the sheer spectacle of the occasion was so brilliant. Eventually the sound levelled out and as they crunched into Kashmir the top of my head came clean off. It was, as you can see if you buy the How the West was Won DVD, scintillating. As great as the previous bands had been, this was something else all together; far bigger and just plain awesome, And watching the game at Old Trafford yesterday felt like that. It was a football occasion on a different level to that which any other club can deliver in England. Hearing over 70,000 people singing 'Ashley Cole is a wanker' was also truly magnificent, and did Chelsea fans really start singing "we love you Ashley, we do" by way of response? I'm sure I heard that. Shocking stuff that. Surely that can't be true! There is an undeniable glamour to such an occasion at Old Trafford. Even if you hate the club, there's no getting away from their almost epic quality as a club and as a football institution, even if the football they play doesn't always live up to the same epic standard. Sunday was all about the occasion and the football was almost secondary.
