Monday, April 02, 2007 Club Tapatio and Inter Milan Win Corvallis Tournament<http://blog.corvallissoccerblog.com/2007/04/club-tapatio-and-inter-milan-win-spring.html> At the end of a full day of exciting indoor soccer Club Tapatio and Inter Milan earned the championship trophies for the first and second divisions respectively of the men's Spring 2007 Indoor Soccer Tournament held at the Corvallis Sports Park <http://www.corvallissportspark.com/>. From 7:00 PM Friday evening to 11:00 PM Saturday the Upper Deck balcony and the floor level benches were filled with friends and families of the twelve teams that traveled to Corvallis to participate in the event. I would guess that at least one hundred people were watching the great games. Inter Milan<http://farm1.static.flickr.com/210/443682142_2e53d14e90_b_d.jpg>traveled from Newport to compete with the Philomath based Miller Timber <http://farm1.static.flickr.com/198/443688289_8ee2951238_b_d.jpg> , Corvallis' own El Sol de Mexico<http://farm1.static.flickr.com/177/443686495_ca4e1fb635_b_d.jpg>and Real Resurreccion<http://farm1.static.flickr.com/201/443686871_fd8a8ddba3_b_d.jpg>. Inter Milan opened the tournament with a loss to Miller Timber on Friday placing them in must win game situations on Saturday. They succeeded in reaching the championship match against Miller Timber and atoning for their earlier loss with a convincing 6-3 win. "Lalo" of Inter Milan put on a skills clinic over the weekend by consistently beating defenders, executing slippery passes and scoring goals like he would never play again. He was awarded the "Most Excellent Player Award" for the second division. <http://farm1.static.flickr.com/181/443681920_c5b77d7ca3_d.jpg>Following their win Inter Milan accepted their championship trophy and celebrated on the field singing with their very lively supporters. It was pretty cool to see a team celebrate at the park with team songs. There should be more of that. I'm also waiting for the body painting by fans. <http://farm1.static.flickr.com/55/175995306_96a33f65f5_m_d.jpg>The eight team first division field was made up of Deportivo Eugene<http://farm1.static.flickr.com/208/443683444_d1c30e3b1f_b_d.jpg>, Pumas <http://farm1.static.flickr.com/185/443686697_10d8488384_b_d.jpg>, Arsenal <http://farm1.static.flickr.com/202/443688061_34a1acf0d1_b_d.jpg>all from Eugene, Boca Juniors <http://farm1.static.flickr.com/191/443687261_f9ed581684_b_d.jpg>from McMinville, and local teams Cometa <http://farm1.static.flickr.com/173/443682906_20c5e789b8_b_d.jpg>, Klowns <http://farm1.static.flickr.com/169/443687473_c1512f7d43_b_d.jpg>, Bruno <http://farm1.static.flickr.com/190/443683674_1e67fc35ba_b_d.jpg> and Tapatio <http://farm1.static.flickr.com/202/443685943_77faad7277_b_d.jpg>. Four teams from the tough field advanced to the semifinals. Cometa faced Deportivo Eugene and Tapatio faced Bruno. Bruno won the last indoor tournament and were favorites to repeat. At halftime Bruno lead Tapatio two goals to nil. Tapatio kept their composure and held Bruno scoreless for the second half and with under a minute to play Steve Starcevich leveled the game from the red line. Following five minutes of scoreless over-time the two teams went into shoot outs. Tapatio's goalkeeper Steve Hunter stone-walled Bruno's first 4 shooters while Tapatio scored two of four attempts to complete the come-from-behind thriller. Cometa defeated a tough Deportivo Eugene team that had tied Tapatio earlier that day. The stage was set for a classic final between the two rival teams. Cometa and Tapatio have a long history spanning almost a decade and whenever the two teams meet the intensity is always high. <http://farm1.static.flickr.com/202/443685943_77faad7277_b_d.jpg>Just a few weeks ago Cometa had defeated Tapatio in Corvallis Sports Park league play. Still confident from the win over Bruno, Tapatio took a early lead against Cometa and never looked back winning the "Corvallis Classico" derby 5-3. It was difficult to select the "Most Excellent Player Award" for the first division. Francisco of Cometa was a force all tournament long. At the recommendation of the referees, Steve Hunter was given the award for his stalwart goalkeeping and semifinal heroics. <http://farm1.static.flickr.com/181/443681526_8f125295c8_d.jpg>The champion and second place teams received trophies. Championship team players each received t-shirts. The "Most Excellent Player Award" recipients received a $20 gift certificate for the Corvallis Sports Park store. The tournament was hosted by Club Taptio with the support of the Corvallis Sports Park and El Sol de Mexico. Thank you to all of the teams and supporters that participated in this tournament. -- "We never hid our humble origins!" INTER TIAMO!
