(5/31/07 - ATHENS, GA) - Lab reports determined that the tumor removed from
Vince Dooley's throat last month is malignant, but the prognosis for the
former University of Georgia football coach is excellent, according to a
school official.
Georgia associate athletic director Claude Felton said Thursday that Dooley
learned the results of the lab report on Wednesday.

Dooley had surgery on May 22 in Atlanta to remove a tumor near his vocal
cords.

"Doctors say the prognosis is excellent," Felton said. "He will have
radiation treatments (in June)."

Felton said Dooley, 74, is making visits as normal to his office on campus
and even attended a speaking engagement, though he couldn't speak.

Dooley had been experiencing some hoarseness in his voice for several months
before an examination revealed the tumor, according to his wife, Barbara
Dooley.

Dooley served UGA for a total of 41 years as head football coach and
athletic director, and retired on June 30, 2004.

Dooley took the Bulldogs to 20 bowl games and won the 1980 national
championship during his 25 seasons as head coach. He was inducted into the
College Football Hall of Fame in 1994.
