England led after a 20-22 22-20 19-21 mixed doubles win for Nathan Roberston
and Gail Emms over Widianto Nova and Lilyana Natsir in the elite team event.
Tracey Hallam then beat Maria Kristin 18-21 21-18 21-18, for 2-0, but Taufik
Hidayat beat Andrew Smith 22-20 21-15 Emms and Donna Kellogg lost 21-18
21-16 to Greysia Polii and Vita Marissa. Kido Markis and Candra Wijaya downed
Anthony Clark and Robert Blair 21-17 21-14. England team manager Ian Wright
said: "There's no disappointment at all. Everybody gave it their best effort
and nobody expected us to be here and 2-0 up against Indonesia." Earlier,
champions China reached the final with a 3-0 victory against Korea. But it
was not all plain sailing for the Chinese, with star Lin Dan arguing with coach
Li Yongbo during an unconvincing win over Shon Seung-mo. Li later warned:
"If he continues like this we might change him in the final." China were
set on their way against by top mixed
doubles pair Zheng Bo and Gao Ling who beat Han Sang-hoon and Lee Hyo-jung
21-17 22-20. Olympic women's singles champion Zhang Ning made it 2-0 with
a 21-14 21-17 victory over Hwang Hye-youn and Lin booked his country's place in
Sunday's final, winning 21-11 18-21 21-14. Indonesia won the first
Sudirman Cup 18 years ago but have been beaten in five other final appearances.
China are chasing their sixth win.
