“We needed to work hard because there were other clubs who wanted him that we
knew about - other clubs offering more money.

“But the player said straight away ‘I want to join Liverpool’. He said we
were his first choice and that was the key for me.

Klub mana tuh ya yang ngebet juga ama Torres sampe nawarin duit lebih
banyak.:p Penggemarnya pasti berharap Torres gabung. Kekekeke.

  El Nino, welcome to Anfield!!!

Fernando Torres passion was key - Rafa
            by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

FERNANDO TORRES’ “passion for Liverpool” was the key to Rafa Benitez smashing
Liverpool’s transfer record to land the Spanish striker.

The 23-year-old passed a medical last night and was due to be unveiled at
Anfield today.

And delighted boss Benitez said: “Atletico Madrid had better offers and the
player had better offers.

“But he always wanted to join Liverpool. That was the key for me.

“We needed to work hard because there were other clubs who wanted him
that we knew about - other clubs offering more money.

“But the player said straight away ‘I want to join Liverpool’. He said we
were his first choice and that was the key for me.

“He has taken a pay cut to come here. Okay he is still on a very good
contract because he is a top player. But to be a successful club you need
players with passion and Fernando has passion.”

Liverpool completed a £20m deal yesterday, with the £5m rated Luis Garcia
moving in the opposite direction, and Benitez added: “I am happy for everybody
at the club, for George Gillett and Tom Hicks who agreed to sanction the deal
and for Rick Parry who worked hard to make it happen.

“He is a fantastic player who can score goals and will work hard for the team.

“I have also seen that he is a very hard worker in training sessions.

“He has talent, but he can also improve.”

Torres has finished top scorer for Atletico in each of the last five seasons,
but Benitez believes the player’s goals record can get even better.

“If you analyse the figures,” he said, “he was a footballer playing first
team football at 17-years-old and it is very difficult to score goals
consistently at that age.

“Then Atletico Madrid were not a top four team and Torres was playing up
front on his own.

“But if you read the comments of the Madrid supporters they say he couldn’t
have worked any harder for the team.

“To score the goals he has at his age, every season, shows he has great
potential and he has the capacity to improve. I hope that at a big club
surrounded by good players he will get even better.”

Benitez also admitted that the sale of Garcia in the opposite direction had
been a sacrifice.

“Luis was a fantastic player for us,” he added. “He had ability and he could
change a game. But it is a good move for him and his family. Atletico is a good
club and we are professionals.”

TORRES SIGNS SIX-YEAR DEAL FOR REDS
04 July 2007

Fernando Torres has today completed his move from
Atletico Madrid to Liverpool after putting pen to
paper on a six-year deal.
The 23-year-old striker will be unveiled to the media
in the number nine shirt vacated by Robbie Fowler just
after 3pm.

Torres passed a medical at Melwood yesterday before
briefly flying back to his homeland to say an
emotional goodbye to fans in Madrid.

The Spaniard leaves the La Liga side with a record of
82 goals in 214 league games.

He spent 12 years at the Vicente Calderon Stadium
after being snapped up at the age of 11.

Torres made his debut aged 17 before becoming
Atletico's youngest ever captain two years later.

The striker was top scorer and best player at both the
2001 European Under-16 Championships and 2002 European
Under-19 Championships. He made his full international
debut in September 2003, and has so far scored 14
goals in 40 caps.

Nicknamed El Nino (The Kid) because of his youthful
appearance, he was selected for the 2006 World Cup in
Germany, where he scored three goals.

In May 2007 Torres hit the headlines when he revealed
the words 'You'll Never Walk Alone' on the inside of
his captain's armband during a match against Real
Sociedad. Two months later he is a Liverpool player

Rafael Benitez has spoken of his delight at securing
one of his top targets in record signing Fernando
Torres.

The Liverpool manager revealed the player is desperate
for success - so much so he even took a pay cut in
order to complete the deal.

"I am really pleased to have signed Fernando,"
enthused Benitez. "We know we are bringing a really
good young player to Liverpool with a great future
ahead of him.

"We know he is an expensive signing but it's not as
much as people have said, and this is a very good
investment for us. He is the player we wanted and the
kind of player we need because he plays with passion.

"He has power and pace. He is good in the air and he
can score goals. He is a different type of striker to
the ones we already have and he can give us a lot of
things.

"He is a very good player who can score a lot of goals
for us. I am not going to put pressure on him and say
Fernando is going to score over 20 goals in a season
for us, because I prefer to have four strikers with 15
goals each.

"Even though he is a young player he has experience
because he was playing in the Spanish First Division
when he was just 17.

"He is desperate to win trophies with us and he wants
to win everything that is possible.

Liverpoolfc.tv reveals 10 things you never knew about
Fernando Torres:

1. The 23-year-old spent his early years in football
as a keeper: "I played in goal until one day I got a
couple of teeth knocked out by the ball," he explains.
"I decided then that my career between the sticks was
finished. Great save, though!"

2. Torres was snapped up by Atletico Madrid at the age
of 11 after scoring a whopping 55 goals in his first
season for amateur side Rayo 13.

3. It was just three years before the transfer rumours
started. Aged only 14, the striker was linked to a
host of European clubs, with Arsenal reportedly having
a bid rejected.

4. In 1998 Torres was voted the best under-14 player
in Europe following some dazzling displays in the Nike
Cup. He'd later win player of the tournament at the
2001 European Under-16 Championships and 2002 European
Under-19 Championships.

5. He was just 19 when he was named Atletico captain
– the youngest skipper in the club's history.

6. It wasn't long before international recognition
came. The striker won his first cap against Portugal
in September 2003. Current Spain boss Luis Aragones
describes him as a player who "never scores two goals
the same".

7. Torres is no stranger to the hairdresser's. One
fansite has counted 11 different hairdos since his
first-team debut in 2001, including a mullet and a
Mohican.

8. Talking of his appearance, the Spanish
international is known in his homeland as El Nino, or
The Kid, because of his baby-face.

9. Like would-be teammates Daniel Agger and John Arne
Riise, Torres also has a penchant for tattoos. The
striker has at least three to date, including one of
his Atletico, Spain and now Liverpool shirt number,
nine, on his right arm.

10. In May 2007 the forward revealed the words You'll
Never Walk Alone written behind his captain's armband
during a game against Real Sociedad. Two months later
he signed for Liverpool, leaving the Vicente Calderon
with a record of 82 goals in 214 league appearances.
