Copa: Brazil beat the odds
Monday 16 July, 2007
Roma and Inter stars proved decisive as Brazil thrashed favourites Argentina
3-0 in the Copa America Final.

Argentina were the favourites going into the match in Maracaibo, having won
all five of their previous games in the tournament, but like the last time
they clashed for this trophy in 2004, it didn't go to plan.

There were a total of five Serie A based players in the starting XI's –
Alexander Doni (Roma), Douglas Maicon (Inter), Juan (Roma), Javier Zanetti
(Inter) and Esteban Cambiasso (Inter).

Within four minutes the Selecao were in front when Julio Baptista concluded
a counter-attack with a thumping strike into the far top corner despite
pressure from Roberto Ayala.

Lionel Messi tried to get the game back on track by sparking a splendid team
move that Juan Sebastian Veron nodded into the path of Juan Roman Riquelme,
only for his half-volley to smash the upright.

Roma goalkeeper Doni also proved decisive, his one-handed reaction save
denying Riquelme again.

Former Fiorentina star Carlos Dunga was forced into a change when Elano went
off injured – already playing in place of the suspended Gilberto Silva – but
Inter's Maicon continued to cause problems down the right.

Brazil went into the break 2-0 up as a desperate Ayala accidentally turned
Maicon's cross into his own net.

Argentina had Hernan Crespo on the bench after he recovered in record time
from a muscular injury suffered less than a fortnight ago, but Pablo Aimar
was thrown on for Cambiasso.

Messi and Aimar both had shots charged down in the same move, but the
Albiceleste's tempo and set-pieces were disappointing and Brazil struck once
more on the counter after 69 minutes.

Wagner Love took the ball out of his own half and threaded through for
Daniel Alves' precise angled drive – his first ever goal for the Selecao.

When Messi finally did put the ball in the back of the net, it was flagged
offside 10 minutes from time.

Roma will have been very happy to see the performance of goalkeeper Doni and
summer signing Juan, who was snapped up from Bayer Leverkusen for £4.5m.
