The Liverpool skipper admires the way the Italians recovered from heartache
in Istanbul to lift the trophy two years later.
Gerrard insists that rather than dwelling on defeat, he and his teammates must
be inspired by what Carlo Ancelotti's side have achieved.
"Athens can act as a spur," he told Liverpoolfc.tv. "It was a big blow for
everyone involved but good players and big clubs bounce back.
"You only have to look at AC Milan and how many finals they've reached over the
years. We've got to use their attitude and not dwell on things. They lost in
Istanbul but bounced back to win in Athens. Who's to say we can't do the same?
"Obviously you read magazines and papers and you listen to fans you know it's
a big blow you didn't bring the trophy home.
"I've seen highlights of the game but I don't need to watch it back. I know
what I did wrong and right, and what the team did wrong or right, but it's time
to move on.
"We have to look now at our goals and dreams for this year, and that's to win
more trophies. Everyone knows the Premier League is the priority but if we can
go a long way in the European Cup again it'd obviously be great for the club
and the fans."
Meanwhile, Gerrard admits he wasn't mentally ready to return to club action
last season following the World Cup.
This time round the Reds number eight has had a full break and revealed he was
dying to get back on the pitch after just three weeks off.
He said: "When I joined up with the lads last year after the World Cup I felt
like I hadn't had a break. I wanted more time off because I didn't feel ready
mentally or physically.
"This time round I've had a long rest and I was looking forward to coming back
in and having a game of football after three and a half weeks.
"At this stage I still feel quite a bit away from full fitness, but obviously
it's still early. We've still got a few weeks to go and I'll be ready by the
time Aston Villa comes around, don't worry about that."
