*The Fans Vote Dennis Bergkamp into the National Football Museum Hall of
Fame 2007*
On Saturday 1 September viewers of BBC Football Focus voted for Arsenal
legend Dennis Bergkamp to join the National Football Museum Hall of
Fame. For the first time the fans had an opportunity to select one of
the players to receive this prestigious award, by voting on a short list
of six compiled by the Hall of Fame's Selection Panel.
Bergkamp joins other great Arsenal players already in the Hall of Fame:
Alex James, Tony Adams, Liam Brady and Ian Wright. He is the first
Dutchman in the Hall of Fame and he enters an elite group of overseas
players to have received the award for their contribution to the English
game: Bert Trautmann, Eric Cantona, Peter Schmeichel and Gianfranco Zola.
Bergkamp's award will be presented, along with 9 others, at the ceremony
in Manchester on 15 November. Tickets can be obtained by contacting the
Museum.
Bergkamp had stiff competition in the public vote from five other great
players, who will surely enter the Hall of Fame themselves in the near
future: Sir Trevor Brooking, Ray Clemence, Paul Scholes, Len Shackleton
and Ray Wilson.
The Hall of Fame is now in its sixth year and players and managers
already inducted include legends such as George Best, Sir Bobby
Charlton, Sir Stanley Matthews and Bill Shankly. Each year the names are
chosen by a panel including Sir Alex Ferguson, Jimmy Greaves, Gary
Lineker, Alan Shearer, Mark Lawrenson and Gordon Taylor.
BBC Football Focus panellist and ex-Arsenal and England star Lee Dixon
said on the programme: “I was fortunate enough to train with him every
day. He was brilliant in games, but he was even better in training. The
way he lived his life, never in the headlines for the wrong reasons, was
always so professional.”
A full list of this years Hall of Fame inductees for 2007 will be
announced shortly .
The Hall of Fame is generously supported by the North West Regional
Development Agency and the Professional Footballers Association.
Note. Inductees into the Hall of Fame must have ended their career or be
at least 30 years of age and have played / managed in England for 5
years or more.
