Italy on Spain's heels | Football Italia Wednesday 2 July, 2008 Spain have risen to the top of FIFA's World Rankings, but Italy have moved into second place.
After securing their first major honour for 44 years by lifting the European Championship trophy, Spain have moved up three places in FIFA's hierarchy to sit on top of the world. Surprisingly, in spite of a disappointing quarter-final exit in Austria and Switzerland, Italy have managed to climb one spot to second. New boss Marcello Lippi [pictured] now has the task of restoring the Azzurri to the summit, where they were after he guided Italy to glory at World Cup 2006. Euro 2008 runners-up Germany have moved into third and Holland climb five places to fifth. Croatia, who suffered quarter-final heartbreak from the penalty spot against Turkey, are on the up after rising eight places to seventh position. The big losers are South American giants Brazil and Argentina, who have fallen to fourth and sixth respectively after hesitant starts to their World Cup 2010 qualification campaign.
