Mourinho: "I'm here to learn"
Sunday 27 July, 2008
Jose Mourinho gave a revealing interview ahead of his first Serie A season.
"I am here to learn," said the Inter boss.

Having won the title in Portugal and England, not to mention the UEFA Cup
and Champions League, Mourinho is taking on a new challenge in Italy.

"There are many great tacticians in Italy and I am here to learn, not to act
like a professor," he told Inter Channel.

"Only those who think they know everything are truly ignorant. I want to
learn something new every day, it's the type of person I am.

"It is a privilege for me to work in Italy and a competition like Serie A,
facing teams with great Coaches. The day I think I know everything and have
nothing left to learn is the day I'll stop coaching."

The Nerazzurri stars have said Mourinho uses a very different training
method to predecessor Roberto Mancini and they'll test them out in tonight's
friendly against Serie B side Bari.

"The collective organisation of the squad is improving day by day. We may
not have the best fitness levels to play a great game, and that includes
Tuesday's tournament with Juventus, who have already been training for three
weeks," continued the former Chelsea boss.

"Our challenge is not to do well now, but rather in the first official
games. I am certain at that moment the team will have everything it needs to
do well.

"At times I think it is better to play badly, as then you can work on your
mistakes the day after. It is also important to face teams in better shape
than you, so we organised friendlies against Juventus – who are preparing
for the Champions League preliminary round – Bayern Munich and Benfica,
whose Leagues start soon.

"I don't want a friendly where we win 10-0 and newspapers write that
Mourinho's Inter play incredible football. The objective is only to keep
improving."

This week Mourinho took a surprising step and released an official statement
explaining to angry Inter fans why he had locked them out of a training
session.

"I understand the passion of the tifosi, but they must understand that
sometimes the team needs to work in isolation. It's like wanting to see all
the Hollywood films in a sneak preview, but that's not possible and so I
have to wait until it is released and buy a ticket."

Finally, Mourinho gave a glimpse of how his home life enabled him to achieve
such success in his career.

"My wife is the perfect partner for a Coach: she has no interest in football
and doesn't like talking about it. When I get home, I certainly don't
discuss my work with her."
