Here's what the boss told members of the press at Melwood this morning. media: Rafa, would you say Robbie was your main transfer target this summer? rafa: Well he is one of a number of very, very good players in the Premier League. He is a player who is settled, is a good professional, has a good mentality and any manager would be really pleased to have Keane in their squad. media: Does this show that you are having a re-think in terms of the attack, with Crouch gone and a very different player in Robbie Keane coming in? rafa: Robbie is very clever so he can play alongside Torres or Kuyt as well as the other strikers. Our idea was to bring in someone who could link up with Gerrard, Torres, Kuyt or Babel that can be good and clever and if they have chances, they will take their chances. I think he is this type of player. media: Do you see him as more of a versatile forward rather than an out-and-out frontman? rafa: Yes, I think he also played out on the right-side at Tottenham as well as up front. As I said before, he is a clever player and as I said before, if you have this type of player it makes it better for the manager. media: You've done quite a bit of business already. Do you feel that shows that you've had good backing from the American owners? rafa: Yes I think so. I think we are trying to improve the squad by buying and selling players. Every year we try to improve the squad and this year we have reduced the gap and we will try to be closer and closer each season. media: The media is speculating that the Gareth Barry deal is dead. Is that true? rafa: I think that today we need to enjoy being able to welcome Robbie Keane here.
