Juventus emerged winners in the tussle for
second spot in Serie A with a thrilling 4-2 home victory over AC Milan,
leaving them six points behind frontrunners FC Internazionale Milano,
who triumphed by the same scoreline over AC Chievo Verona.
Del Piero penalty
In
a match billed as critical in the Italian title race, veteran striker
Alessandro Del Piero set Juve on their way from the penalty spot after
15 minutes, but their visitors hit back 16 minutes later when Pato slid
the ball in following good work from Ronaldinho. Parity did not last
long, however, as Giorgio Chiellini headed the home side back in front
from a 34th-minute corner, and Claudio Ranieri's men went in two up at
the break when Amauri also nodded in.
Amauri double
The
Rossoneri came out hungry after the break and fought their way back
into the match through Massimo Ambrosini's deflected effort in the 56th
minute, yet their hopes began to evaporate when Gianluca Zambrotta
picked up a second yellow card only nine minutes later. A second goal
for Brazilian striker Amauri on 69 minutes then put the encounter
beyond their reach.
Ibrahimović goals
Zlatan
Ibrahimović grabbed a double of his own in the day's other high-profile
encounter, but not before his Inter side and Chievo had exchanged two
goals apiece. Maxwell and Dejan Stanković put Inter two up and basement
club Chievo then levelled, leaving Ibrahimović to register in the 79th
and 88th minutes, either side of a red card for the visitors' Santiago
Morero.
Capital gains
AS Roma waited even
later to clinch their match, meanwhile, as Mirko Vučinić fired a
90th-minute winner in a 3-2 home victory over Cagliari Calcio. That
result took the capital outfit up to tenth, and their city neighbours
S.S. Lazio also found relief near the final whistle as Cristian
Ledesma's 85th-minute effort secured a 3-3 draw at Udinese Calcio after
the hosts had led 3-0.
Viola success
In
Sunday's other matches, ACF Fiorentina consolidated fifth spot by
seeing off visitors Calcio Catania 2-0, while Genoa CFC remain sixth
despite being held 1-1 at home by nine-man Atalanta BC. US Città di
Palermo are up to ninth after winning 2-0 against AC Siena and UC
Sampdoria prevailed by the same scoreline at struggling Reggina Calcio.
