Gareth Barry

Manchester City are set to hand Barclays Premier League rivals Liverpool a
double transfer blow as the mega-rich Eastlands club close-in on Carlos Tevez
and Gareth Barry in deals worth a combined £42 million.
Manager Mark Hughes is currently in the Middle East to discuss his summer
wish-list with the club's Abu
Dhabi owners and has reportedly identified the in-demand pair as vital to his
plans to transform City's fortunes next term. The Argentine striker's
representative Kia Joorabchian is set to hold one last meeting with Manchester
United officials this week as the former West Ham forward's two-year loan
agreement reaches its conclusion.

But with the Old Trafford club stalling on the popular 25-year-old's £32
million valuation,
City are ready to match Tevez' asking price, offering a four-year
contract worth nearly £140,000 a week, to snatch the Anfield transfer
target.

According to the News of the World, Liverpool tabled the lowest offer for the
South American star, while interest from both Tottenham and Arsenal has
seemingly surpassed in light of City's chase.

News of City's pursuit for Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry will present a
another setback for Reds boss Rafa Benitez as he looks to bolster his Premier
League runners-up when the trasnfer window re-opens in July.

A long-term admirer of the England international, the Spaniard is
keen to renew his interest in the 28-year-old who has just one year to
run on his existing Villa Park deal.
The protracted saga to sign Barry last summer was ultimately scuppered by Villa
manager Martin O'Neill's refusal to budge on his £18 million valuation of the
player.

But with the Midlands club keen to cash in on their captain, without
running the risk of  losing him on a Bosman free at the end of next
season, City are reportedly confident of landing the player's services
for a cut-price £10million.

However, Barry must decided whether to accept the lure of £90,000 a
week wages at the City of Manchester Stadium or hold out for the
prospect of playing Champions League football should he opt to leave Villa
after 11 years service.
