Akhirnya Xabi minta dijual. Susah memang menolak daya tarik main
bareng Ronaldo dan Kaka.
PR besar buat Benitez mencari pengganti Xabi. Liverpool butuh pemain
kreatif di tengah yang bisa main di sayap atau penetrasi ke tengah.
Paling cocok ya David Silva.

Xabi Alonso sought to bring his move to Real Madrid closer today by
handing Liverpool a formal transfer request but the two clubs are yet
to reach an agreement. Although Madrid consider Alonso fundamental to
their plans their president, Florentino Pérez, remains reluctant to
meet Liverpool's price. Rafael Benítez is determined not cede ground,
with around €5m separating the two sides. In taking the first public
step, Alonso is hopeful of forcing the two clubs to broker a deal.

Real Madrid have made an offer of €24m (£20.5m) for Alonso while
Liverpool originally quoted €40m – even though Benítez had been keen
to sell him to Juventus for half that amount while he pursued Gareth
Barry last summer. Having missed out on Barry, Benítez is holding out
for €30m (£26m) plus incentives which would see the total exceed €33m.
Pérez, though, has resisted increasing his offer above €25m.

The departure of Alonso, who is the Liverpool fans' player of the
year, would be a blow for the club. Fernando Torres recently said it
would be a "serious loss" if his compatriot were to depart. Liverpool
would then turn their attention to the Wigan midfielder Lee
Cattermole, while there have also been negotiations with the Roma
midfielder Alberto Aquilani.

Real Madrid have made little secret of their desire to sign Alonso.
"We need a midfielder and Alonso would fit our system: it is no
mystery that we are interested in him," Manuel Pellegrini, the coach,
said. He also admitted there are "no other players" like the Spaniard.

That does not translate into a big enough offer to convince Liverpool,
however. Pérez draws a distinction between "investment-footballers"
and "cost-footballers" and Alonso falls into the second category. He
said Liverpool's price tag was "detached from reality" and he could
not understand how Alonso's value could be "twice as much as it was a
year ago".

Alonso told Benítez he wanted to leave at the start of the summer. He
has been determined not to be forced into an ugly stand-off or a
rebellion and the transfer request suits both clubs.

Madrid feel their position has been strengthened by Alonso handing in
the transfer request but that it was also an attempt to flush out an
renewed offer from the Spanish club and hasten a resolution two days
after Benítez told the midfielder that he wanted his future clear
before the weekend. Benítez does not want to appear to be responsible
for Alonso's departure after fans reacted angrily to his proposed sale
last season, supporting the Spaniard and chanting against the signing
of Barry. Alonso's subsequent form increased the pressure on the
manager. His declaration of intent relieves Benítez of that burden.

The transfer request is designed not only to pressure Liverpool into
letting him go but to push Madrid towards making a bid acceptable to
Anfield. Madrid wanted Alonso to go public. He has now done his bit:
it is up to Madrid to do theirs too.

Javier Mascherano's brother has revealed the Liverpool midfielder
wants to join Barcelona – but admitted that he will probably be forced
to stay at Anfield.

Sebastián Mascherano said: "Javier wants to go to Barcelona. That
would be the best thing for him and his family. I am sure he and Leo
Messi have spoken about it. Leo is one of those who is most insistent
on Javier playing for Barcelona. Hopefully, the opportunity will
arrive."
