I did the same like I did to backup a plugin. If I input the file
name, the procedure would create a correct .backup file. But if I left
the input box blank, the .backup don't be created. Don't know why,
because all I do is the same, and one work one not.

But I like this backup approach which has many pros like:

1) It's there. No need to learn linux shell commands; :)
2) If there is a time option, it would be easy to overcome the too-
many-pages-problem;
3) Field wiki administrator can backup their own pages folder, no need
to get the server's access right;

I've thought a time period option when doing the backup. The procedure
only need to backup the files which was modified in the specified time
period:

1) The period time you want to backup:

    From: [a] Beginning* [b] Last time you backup
    To    : [c] Specify a  certain date     [d] Now

* Beginning means the oldest file modified time.

2) Your backup has saved as {now}.backup;

In this way the wiki admin can backup his wiki easily. The updated
pages can be backup in the new period option and overwrite the old
version pages if he does a restore. If a page does not change, it
doesn't need to backup every time.

But this need new script to check the option.

Cheers,
linly
