This is an excellent suggestion. Unfortunately I don't think it will work very easily--at least not as easily as the other path variables for various code-based reasons.
I'm glad you found another solution. There's also URL rewriting which could do this--with or without cleanURL's. Therefore I don't anticipate adding this to the core. Just a quick response...
