sorry, i had as yet no time to check any of your suggested code
changes, nor think thoroughly about the implications of combinations
of various skin syntaxes etc.

I do much prefer to stick to the present syntax for simple array
elements in site.config, namely
keyword:key: value
and not introduce another one like
skin[triad]: test*

I find it confusing and complicated. Looks a bit like a php array
element, but not quite (the colons are missing).
I think it would only confuse to introduce into site.config php like
syntax. The whole point of site.config was to make syntax simpler.

This was also the reason why i suggest to relax the syntax to allow
spaces after the colons. Not to insist on a space, just to be a bit
more flexible, as an admin not always knows if a space is required.
It was to me a logical step from
  skin: triad
to
  skin: triad: test*
but allow also
  skin:triad: test*
and even
  skin:triad:test*
if possible.
Anyway, i think it is important to stick to one syntax in config, and
the syntax for normal parameters and for array elements is nicely
similar.

So, those are my strong objections to syntax like skin[triad]: test*

;-) cheers,
~hans
