got it working!
I needed to add this line to my htaccess
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !files/(.*)\.
to allow access to the uploads folder. Update in the docs.
Got my inspiration from this site which provides a lot more tips about
how to allow or ban users, ip-addresses, hotlinking etc via htaccess.
