OK. 3.11 made an impact on this issue.
the "<br />" stuff is no longer visible on the site.index page.
However....

Reindex button refreshes pages that shows this (partial listing):
Pages still to be indexed:
action.zones

<snipped>

BUT... If I Ctrl+Refresh, it shows up like this:
Recently indexed pages:
action.zones

ReIndex button again shows it
Pages still to be indexed:
action.zones

and finally, I took the instructions literally (duh) and just used the
Reload button in my browser
until it was all "indexed".
