Another option came to my mind. The lazy one.

If and only if one expects users intuitively do not expect to set auths for 
"blogger" if they add "blog*" to an auth page, then you could lazily treat 
"blog*" and "blog.*" identically.

If they are interpreted identically they cannot be confused. The only thing 
would be that you had to know that you are setting auths for groups instead of 
strings.
