I'm not sure that assumption is correct--that the default settings won't work on all situations with cleanUrls, and it is entirely probable other things might break were I to make this change... I'm happy if you have a working solution. But if you want to pursue this point further, I'd recommend posting it as a separate thread and solicit feedback from others.
