I live with 3 smokers - both of my sons and my soon-to-be daughter-in-law. Neither my husband nor I ever smoked. Both of my parents smoked for years until my father was diagnosed with emphysema. As soon as he found out, he quit cold turkey and never smoked again. My mother smoked until she died 14 years ago. Every time she would go in the hospital the doctor would order a chest x-ray. He knew she had emphysema, but never told her, and never encouraged her to quit. If she had known she had emphysema, I know she would have quit! But it was too late. On my husband's side, his father smoked for years and years and within the last 5 years quit using some kind of herbal stuff. Neither of his brothers smoke. I have 2 brothers that smoked for years, but they have since quit. So, you really can't say it is by example that kids pick up smoking as I said before that neither my husband nor I ever smoked.
