I think the recent changes were to allow for all those times when the
pre-selected Meetup times and sites were not convenient to the
majority of would-be participants. If your previous Meetup
was "hijacked" to another city, maybe the person who volunteered to
be group coordinator (Meetup.com didn't appoint anybody, just sent
out notices that if nobody volunteered to coordinate then that
particular Meet would be deleted) had spent the last year moaning
that there weren't any Meetups in his or her town {grin}...

Since the changes to the Meetup site, I don't believe "they" will be
starting up any new Meetups - I think the idea is that people who
want a local Meetup are expected to sign up and arrange it
themselves. If you'd like to give it a try, you might be able to re-
start the Meetup in your town, since the old one's got a new
destination now. When I volunteered to be group coordinator I found
it relatively painless (though the screens have been redesigned and
are somewhat confusing) - basically, just sign up, select a date and
a place, and if you know the BookCrossing screen names of any of the
folks who showed up at your last meet, PM them to let them know about
the new one. (I was working with an existing Meetup; the process to
start a new one might be different.)

If that's all too headache-y, maybe you could put a small ad in your
local paper's "community event" section inviting people to a
BookCrossing meetup of your own.
