Nudist stuff: A lot of people have a very skewed idea of nudism. It is a very strange
thing that the majority of people think it is a sex thing. Whilst I wasn't brought up
in a nudist household, having been born in Finland I frequently saw family and friends
in the nude in saunas. It took me until about the age of 5 to realise that bodies (and
indeed body parts) come in all different shapes and sizes. It's just the way we are
and it is great at beaches when you see people of all ages, body types and stages of
nudist development turning up and just acting normal. It makes me laugh when young men
(usually) come along and try to chat up a girl thinking that as she is nude she must
be easy. Most nudist girls I have met have been supremely confident and more than
capable of looking after themselves. For me it's not a sex thing and it really isn't a
liberation thing.. in fact it is just a normal thing (shrugs shoulders).
Fight club: Someone described it as a book about disenfranchised men meeting in
basements and beating the crap out of each other. NO NO NO. That is not true, The film
is about living in a soul-less cosumeristic society and the reaction against against
the impotence of not making a difference. The fighting bits are in fact very short and
the movie moves on after them. They are pretty graphic but I think that they are just
a metaphor for the final angry sttriking out and wanting to be hit back just so you
know you connected with something. Those of you in the US who will vote Kerry or Nader
in November, those in the UK who next year will vote Libdem or Con will know the
feeling of voting knowing that it will not make a damn bit of a difference and the
wistful wish that someone...anyone would look at your vote and want to know why. Watch
Fight Club the movie, I think you will enjoy or at least get thinking about it (I will
get back to you regard the book - ordered and waiting for
amazon).
Short stories: I never used to enjoy them until we did a short stoy reading at a local
literature club. Now I love them, my favourite from the particular collection we did
then is The Third Bank of the River. My recommendation of a short story collection is
Strange Pilgrims by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. 'The Saint' is just wonderful, 'I only
Came to Use the Phone' is frightening.
Better go now.
Best to all as always,
Marko.
