Any time you hand a book to a friend, or mail it off
to another bookcrosser, it's considered a controlled
vs. a wild release. You're welcome to make release
notes on a controlled release (although Reno, the
bookcrossing founder, suggests that you do not do
this), but please make sure you select "controlled
release" before entering your location when entering
the release details.

For example, on the release page where it starts with
"select country", there's a "controlled release"
right near the countries at the top of the list.

The reason I suggest this is that when you select your
location before picking Controlled Release, everyone
in your area will receive a release note email telling
them where to go hunting for a wild book. It's
extremely aggrivating to get a release note email only
to find it listed as "Your city, your state, passed to
a friend". I hate getting a release note for a book
that I'll never be able to go hunting for! I always
mutter a grumpy "I'm happy for your friend, but why
are you telling me about this?" when I get one of
these release notes.

If you enter the release details beginning with
"controlled release", it won't send out release note
emails to people in your area. It's really just a
courtesy thing :)

The short answer is you can do anything you please to
mark and track your releases, but it's appreciated
when you stop to think about how your release notes
will appear to others before clicking the final submit
button.
