this is how it was explained to me:

ring: people join a ring. the book passes from
bookcrosser to bookcrosser until the ring is complete,
then the book goes back to it's original owner

ray: same thing only at the end of the ray the book
gets wild released

you can check out my bookshelf, I have some rays on
there...you can kind of see how it works...the first
person on the list sends it to the second and so on
until everyone that has signed up has gotten a chance
to read the book.
