I read The Lord of the Rings before The Hobbit (and before the movies), and didn't had any trouble following the story. The prologue explains a lot.
Have you guys ever read any other works by Tolkien? I got Farmer Giles of Ham last year's Christmas, and I realle enjoyed it.
