What the Boy Scouts try to create with a Klondike Derby is, they create the atmosphere of the Klondike that used to run in Alaska for the gold run. The troops have big hand made sleds (our troop does), instead of dogs the scouts will pull it.Scouts go to stations. Stations are where the judges will give points for what the scouts know. Like one station will have first aid, scouts have to show or/and tell the judges anything about first aid that they ask.(The judges are usually in this small box a size of say an out house) After that scouts will pull the sled to the next station and so on. This will have to be down in so many seconds. The faster the better.The area that is covered is a big area,like a size of a park. So the stations can be spread out. Examples of stations are first aid,scout spirit,knots,cooking etc. When there is snow it's better because than the scouts don't have to pull the sled so much just guide it since the snow helps out alot. After the race is over than (up to scoutmaster) everyone has fun, or whatever else the scouts might have to do. The race usually runs just for 1 day but for our district it's at a scout camp that needs to be traveled to a bit. So they stay for the weekend. Set up camp Friday,race on Sat., than home on Sun. Except for this year where the weather was too bad to be there all weekend. My daughter's boyfriend's troop has their Klondike @ a park. And they are only there for the day. We tease him because he is not the same district as us. And his district and ours really don't like each other. But it's all good no real big fights. We are just better.
