Quite simply, anything that will not fit in your mailbox is usually left at the post office, with a notice in your box to pick it up there... as others have noted, many paperbacks and even some small hardbacks will fit in the box. Media Mail is no different than any other parcel you receive via the USPS - some carriers will leave it at your door; I'm not sure of the exact regulation - mine has left it on the porch and rang the doorbell.
