Some time ago I read that a nobel prizewinner in Economics had done his work on the most effective investment a country can make to increase its wealth. I'm very sorry I can't tell you the Economist's name. He found, though, that the best and only sure way was to invest in public education. By that, he was not just talking about formal schooling, but about institutions like Libraries. That was before the advent of the personal computer, so now I'm sure his arguments would be even more true, as libraries offer such access now. Surely, the growing practice of BookCrossing must function the same way, advancing literacy and personal reading and encouraging critical thinking in we who are just ordinary folks.
