I also like the soda machine idea, at least then they HAVE to touch it.  There 
was a thread in Chit Chat yesterday about watching people not pick up our 
books.  

  I've tried the jury assembly room in our courthouse.
  You'd think with a captive audience it would work. I
  even went down on my lunch hour to see if the book was
  still there. Yep! About 100 people ignored it. <Sigh>
