OK. Decided to do a little investigating myself. Found that it really depends
on the disease he suffers from. Macular Dystrophy is certainly hereditary but
can be exacerbated by smoking and poor diet quality.
Macular Degeneration however is not necessarily hereditary and it's exact
causes are widely unknown. More common in women, blue eyed and blonde haired
people, age related, some medecines seem to increase risk (old style
anti-malarial and some anti psychotics) and again smokers with a poor diet most
at risk.
Guess it is in truth his business and unless he decides to become a figurehead
in raising money for research then we should accept his retirement with grace.
So in short, quit smoking, eat plenty of oily fish and fresh fruit, stay young
and wear sunglasses and enjoy the books he releases. e will be leaving one hell
of a back catalogue to re-read.
BTW I also liked the Stand, forgot about that one.

RE:BTW - A work colleague has mentioned that King is in the process of writing
his last one or two books. Ths being due to him going blind as a result of
substance abuse whilst he was a kid. Is this true?
Actually I've read that he has (depending on the article) Macular Degeneration
or Stargardt Macular Dystrophy which can both lead to blindness over time.
Neither are caused by substance abuse but rather by heredity.
