Well the obvious place to start would be Stephen Hawking's a Brief History of
Time and the follow up The Universe in a Nutshell. he also did a couple of
books with short essays, On the shoulders of Giants and another that I cannot
remember the title of. All very readable and educational. Oddly enough he is on
record as saying that he believes that the information contained in Brief
History disproves the existence of God but it acually had the opposite effect
on me. It confirmed the necessity of a guiding force if not what the christians
believe in as a super being called God.

Next up I would heartily recommend Michio Kaku's Hyperspace. Initally leant to
me by a friend, the book impressed me so much I went out and oredred a copy for
myself.

Hope this is the kind of thing you are looking for.

Where you see a crowd I see a flock.
It's sheep we're up against,
It's sheep we're up against,
It's sheep we're up against.

Everything you know is wrong.
