I read 6 books in May:

The Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Albom -- what a great
book! It's not a big book and was so hard to put down. It was a
little unnerving in the beginning because the author, Mitch Albom,
kept putting little subtitles: 60 minutes of life left, 30 minutes,
10, and etc. It was a little jarring to be reminded so in-my-face that
the main character, Eddie, was going to die and very soon. All our
lives, things happen and more times than not it's things we don't
understand. It's nice to have all that "explained" and death is not so
scary.

Ghost Riders by Sharyn McCrumb--What a frustrating book! On the one
hand, I liked the voices of the characters very much. I could just
about hear them speaking in my mind. I truly enjoyed some of the
characters very much but they didn't appear as often as I liked. On
the downside: what was this story supposed to be about? I was drawn
to it because of the title and the summary I saw in the book club
newsletter: it's the Civil War and a young woman dresses up like a
man and follows her husband off to war. But there was a whole lot of
other stuff in there and I wondered what the point of the story was
supposed to be. :P

Public Enemies by John Walsh w/Philip Lerman--I always thought Walsh's
show did a lot of good for the viewing public -- putting a spotlight
on fugitives from justice. What a shame such a tragedy would bring a
good man like this to be so dedicated to catching criminals. He lost
his young son, Adam, to a killer about 25 years ago. The crime has
never been solved. Many times, Walsh sounds harsh and angry. It's
perfectly understandable. There are crimes that sicken, horrify and
anger me too. There's absolutely no question about how he feels. It
makes for an excellent TV show...but does it make a great book? For me
... no.

Cut by Patricia McCormack--I started reading Cut by Patricia McCormick
because I wanted to understand why kids would want to hurt themselves
like that. I've read the journals of teenage girls that cut themselves
with blades and knives and other sharp instruments and it's just
always upset me so much that they'd do that. I don't really feel I
gained a lot of insight from the book. It's more geared to young
adults, I suppose, and it would be a good book for a teenager to read.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls--She recounts some hair-raising
experiences growing up with her sisters and brother. Her parents were
totally dysfunctional even if they did love their kids...and it was
hard to tell at times. I was amazed that the three older kids did so
well, managing to support themselves and make good lives for
themselves. I have a lot of admiration for what Jeannette Walls and
her brother and sister were able to accomplish.

Koko by Peter Straub--I read Koko by Peter Straub for the third time.
I think I finally understood it all the way through! I enjoyed it the
first two times I read it too but I also felt very confused toward the
end of the book -- not sure what was happening, to whom and why. That
is my only complaint about Peter Straub. I've gotten confused reading
a number of his books. This was one of the scariest books I've ever
read!

Now reading: Mystery by Peter Straub
