Oh, no, it's not a big deal at all. My friend
who introduced me to BookCrossing, yvensong, has
set up hers in the Zone Cafe in Reno, mine is at
Keva Juice in Carson City.

All I did is introduce myself to the manager,
summarize what bookcrossing is, hand her a flyer
from the Press Release page of BookCrossing, and
ask that they let us maintain a labeled box on
the little table in the corner. She asked a
couple of questions and I answered them to her
satisfaction, and she said "let's try it" and now
every time I go in she reports that people are
looking in the box. (I do buy a Keva Juice
smoothie almost every time I go in. :)

I assume yvensong did something similar. You
would adapt the strategy to your particular
strengths as a "salesman" - perhaps leaving a
more complete "brochure" of BookCrossing
information with the manager. Maybe you'd make
an appointment to speak with him or her. I did
it just be walking in because I didn't want to
make it a Big Deal - but then I was careful to
choose a time when she wasn't likely to have a
line of customers.

Just pick a place where you go regularly, where
the customers have a moment while waiting for
their turn or their order to look at your box,
and where the staff will respect your box and not
put it on the floor cuz now they decided they
need that table or shelf.... :) I wonder if
anyone has put one in a barber shop or beauty
salon or waiting room at an auto repair place....

I'm still working out the details of my strategy
to maintain the OBCZ - my most significant
remaining difficulty is figuring out how to get
those who are "catching" the books to become
contributors (but I'm sure that's a common
difficulty). But I think I have enough of a
handle on it to answer any further questions you
may have - I hope you go for it and let us know
how you did it and where it is!
