I think that classics are books that "withstand the test of time" and people
keep reading them because of some ethereal sense of "people are always the
same", or whatever. Bronte, Alcott, Hemingway, Faulkner, Mark Twain, etc.,
have consistency and staying power. And I also think that it takes time
("distance") to be able to tell if something is classic or not. Think "classic
look" in clothing: it withstands the tests of time and always will look good.

I would be interested to see that top 100 list. Where did you find
that? I would like to see how many I have read and how many I did or did
not like. I am sure War and Peace is on there and I gave up on that one.
And, I wonder which current writers people think are great writers.
Sometimes I am not even sure what that term means. What makes them great or
classics?
