I'm reading Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. This is a huge book about 1000 pages. It has been my goal to read it for a long time, so I just pick it up and read 100 pages once in a while. My goal is to finish it within this year. I'm not too worried about timing with that one. I can interrupt it whenever I want with other books... which I am doing currently with *Scars of Sweet Paradise* a bio of Janis Joplin by Alice Echols and *The Moon and the Sun* by Vonda McIntyre.
The Janis Joplin book is well written and well researched. I am getting a lot of insights from it. I do a little song-writing and singing on the side and I used to idolize Janis when I was a young girl, but was also appalled by the tragedy of her life. I find this book is putting it into context for me (so far.) The Moon and the Sun is a very interesting sort of "alternate history" where a young woman in Louis the XVI's (the Sun King) is the sister of a "natural philosopher" Jesuit priest who has gone out for his Majesty and captured a sea monster. The court and the king want to find the "Organ of Immortality" as the beasts are considered immortal. But the Jesuit just wants to study nature. The sister is divided between her dreams of a marriage to a handsome foreign prince and her more sensible desire to help her brother in his career. The sea monster seems to have some sort of special powers and may not be as much as a beast as the court seems to think! I am having a little trouble keeping some of the minor characters in the court apart, but otherwise, the book is very interesting and I definitely wants to know "what happens next". I often like to have a nonfiction and a fiction going at the same time. Or a couple of each. Makes finishing up books slower though, so right now I am only signed up for one book ring... when it comes I will drop all and read only the book in the ring... but since I tend to be reading several books at a time, I don't want to join many rings... then I will be able to read only ring books! But I do find many of the rings I hear of on this list tempting!
