I do think the dude that does the database maintenance works for free though doesn't he? The server space alone must cost big bucks for all the storage. I mean that is a lot of books. The guy who set up the site donated all the programming time it took to make it work. And it works pretty nifty for a free site. Most people don't pay anything to use BookCrossing.
$5 doesn't seem like much to pay to me. I like to keep my wings shined up! (Smiles) On the forums about the fixes I was reading as things went along and the #s for the stats will be restored later. I am in IT although I am but a humble writer and I know it takes a lot of work to keep the stuff in the background running, especially with the number of members and books rising all the time. The more members the more benefit to me as I can find any book I desire and trade. So I do not share y'all's cyncism at this time.
