This month I have read The Color Purple by Alice Walker. (bookring) This was a bookring. In a nutshell it is a story of a woman's life and her rise into the realization that she is somebody. She rises from a girl who is abused by everyone to a woman who will not take it anymore. It is written in her voice and presented as letters she writes to God and to her long lost sister, Nettie. You can hear her pain and feel her rise. Powerful Story.
Maskerade By Terry Pratchett This is Discworld's version of Phantom of the Opera. A young girl from Lancre joins the opera in Ankh-Morpork. Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax read the tea leaves and see bad things coming for the opera so they head to Ankh-Morpork to lend a hand. I'm a big discworld fan and Granny and Nanny are two of my favorite characters. I could go on for hours about all the great things in the book. To Have And To Hold by Jane Green I'm not a big chick lit reader. I dabble occasionally. I picked up this book because someone in my office was listening to it and I missed the end of it and had to know what happened to the main character. This is the story of Alice. Self proclaimed mosuy person. She meets a man and with his "helpful suggestions" is is transformed from mousy to fabulous. She sets aside all she wants to tranfer herself into the person someone else wants her to be. The book explores her happiness and transformation back to her orginal self which was not so mousy after all. Great Lies To Tell Small Kids by Andy Riley (book ring) A clever little cartoon book that I read as part of a bookring. It was good for a few laughs I'm A Stranger Here Myself by Bill Bryson (book ring) Bill Byson, an American, spent 20 years in England. He worked there, married there and began raising his family there. The family decides to move back to America. This book is a collection of essays about his experiences once he arrives back. Some of them made me laugh out loud in an uncontrollable fashion, so be cautious of reading in public places. Have a happy month of reading!
