The Back of the Book

In seventeeth-century London a woman survives by whoring and thieving,
determined to gain - by any means - a secure place in society.

Moll Flanders, born and abandoned in Newgate prison, is forced to make her
own way in life. She applies herself with gusto to husband-hunting,
committing incest, adultery and bigamy in her quest for the security that
marriage brings. And when her looks can no longer guarantee her an
income, she turns to petty crime, becoming an accomplished thief and
pickpocket, 'the greatest Artist of my time'.

Opportunist or survivor, hardened criminal or victim of circumstances,
Moll tells the story of her downfall and redemption with irresistible
candour and wit.
